WHICH SERVICE DO YOU NEED?

It’s the question no driver wants to have to ask, but the good news is that when the check engine light does come on, it doesn’t automatically mean bad news for your vehicle. In fact, there are a number of reasons your check engine light may come on, since it is designed to signal a malfunction in your vehicle’s emissions, fuel, ignition or exhaust systems. Every time you start your vehicle, the check engine light should turn on for a few seconds and then turn off. If the light remains on, it’s the sign of a problem. And if the light begins to blink, it means that there is a serious issue that needs to be addressed immediately. If the check engine light blinks while you are driving, you should pull over as quickly and safely as possible and call for assistance.

OIL & BREAK CHECKS

20220704_130610.jpg

It's important to regularly change your oil to help keep your car, truck or SUV running smoothly. The traditional rule of thumb has been that you should have your vehicle’s oil changed every 3,000 miles. But thanks to advancements in automotive technology, newer vehicles can now go anywhere from 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes.

WHAT IS THE GRINDING NOISE MY BRAKES ARE MAKING?

When your vehicle’s brakes are working properly, they should be relatively quiet. Which means if you ever hear your brakes make a grinding noise that sounds as if metal is scraping against metal, you should treat the noise as an alarm warning you that something may be wrong.

The cause could be as simple as a piece of debris getting near your brakes. But the most common cause for that grinding noise is brake pad wear. When brake pads become worn out, their metal backing grinds against the brake rotor, causing the loud noise and possible damage to your rotors.

Another common sign that your brakes may need to be replaced is if your brakes feel different than usual. If they feel spongy or if it becomes difficult to press down when braking, it’s likely that air has gotten into your brake lines or that your vehicle is low on brake fluid.

TIRE CHANGE

Treads are the pattern of grooves and channels on the surface of your tires that help divert rain and snow to increase your vehicle’s traction. Even with regular rotation, the tread of your tires will still wear down over time. An easy way to verify that your tread is above the legal minimum tread depth of 2/32” is to take a penny and insert it upside down into a tread groove. If you’re still able to see Abraham Lincoln’s entire head, then your tread isn’t as deep as it needs to be, and it is likely time to replace your tire.

BATTERY CHANGE

WILL LEAVING THINGS PLUGGED INTO MY CAR CHARGER DRAIN MY BATTERY?

Trying to start your car only to find that your battery is dead is a terrible feeling. So, it’s smart to make sure that you’re doing everything you can to avoid having to deal with a dead battery. And that includes figuring out if you’re inadvertently draining your car battery by leaving vehicle accessories plugged into a USB car charger or 12V jack.

In most cases, your vehicle’s battery life won’t be affected by prolonged use of your USB car charger. The amount of power that your smartphone, for example, draws from your vehicle’s battery is so small, it would take several days to drain it completely. However, there is still a chance it could drain your battery — especially if you have an older vehicle or if the battery needs to be replaced soon. In general, it’s a good idea to avoid using the car charger or 12V jack when your vehicle isn’t in use.

How Can I Tell if My Battery Needs to be Replaced?

Just like the batteries in your television remote control, your vehicle’s battery will eventually stop working. Depending on driving conditions and how often you drive, your battery should last up to five years — so as you near that five-year mark, you may want to look for signs that it needs to be replaced. One sign of an aging battery is slow cranking noise when you try to start your engine. The smell of rotten eggs is another indicator that your battery may need to be replaced. And, of course, if your check engine/battery light comes on.
